Prescription medications should always be administered as prescribed. Failure to follow labeled instructions could put your pets health at risk.  Never share medications between pets. Remember that when used properly, medications have a low risk to benefit ratio.  Keep in mind that some prescriptions may require monitoring.  This ensures that your pet is receiving the maximum benefit from his/her medications and helps reduce the risk of complications.

A Veterinary Client Patient Relationship (VCPR) exists when a veterinarian has examined your pet within the last year. This is required by the Kentucky Veterinary Practice Act.  It is unethical and illegal to prescribe, diagnose or recommend treatment of your pet without an annual VCRP.

Purchasing a prescription medication over the Internet can be safe – if you use a legitimate online pharmacy. Be wary of ads that do not require a prescription or sound too good to be true. Unfortunately, some online pharmacies will sell medications that are low-quality or even fake. The FDA has found some Internet pharmacies offer unapproved pet drugs and counterfeit pet products, make fraudulent claims, dispense prescription drugs without requiring a prescription, and sell expired drugs.

If you plan to purchase medications online look for the Veterinary Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Site (Vet-VIPPS) Logo listed at www.vips.info.
